Why go to Tabuk

Tabuk is the capital of Saudi Arabia's northwest, an agricultural city of farms and orchards set on a high plateau. Its surroundings are some of the most dramatic in the Kingdom: the Hisma, a sea of red and ochre sandstone pillars and arches; Wadi Disah, a deep canyon lined with palms and running streams; and a Red Sea coastline of coral reefs and quiet coves.

The region is also where the future is being built. NEOM, with projects such as Sindalah island and Oxagon, lies along the coast to the west, and AlUla is a scenic drive to the south. Tabuk makes an excellent base for exploring all of it.

Things to do around Tabuk

Wadi Disah

Southwest of Tabuk

A spectacular canyon of towering sandstone walls with palms, reeds and freshwater pools at its floor. Explore by 4x4 with a local guide and stop for a picnic in the shade; it is one of the great desert experiences of Arabia.

The Hisma desert

West of Tabuk

A vast landscape of eroded sandstone towers, natural arches and red dunes, closely related to Jordan's Wadi Rum. Ancient rock inscriptions are found throughout.

Tabuk Castle

Tabuk city

A compact stone fortress, rebuilt in the Ottoman era on a historic pilgrim route, with a courtyard, mosque and rooftop views. A small exhibit inside tells the city's story.

Hejaz Railway Station

Tabuk city

Restored buildings and a vintage locomotive recall the early-20th-century line that once linked Damascus with Madinah, a fine stop for history and photography.

The north Red Sea coast

Haql to Duba

Clear water, coral reefs and long empty beaches line the coast toward the Gulf of Aqaba, good for snorkeling and diving; see our Red Sea diving guide.

Farms and flowers

Around Tabuk

The plateau's farms grow roses, grapes and olives; spring brings colorful fields and seasonal produce markets.

Where to stay in Tabuk

Tabuk has a solid choice of international hotels; for beach resorts, look to the coast and The Red Sea.

Getting there

From the US, Saudia flies nonstop to Riyadh and Jeddah from several American gateways, and Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad connect easily through their Gulf hubs; see our guide to nonstop flights from the US. Domestic flights from Riyadh and Jeddah reach Tabuk's Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport in about two hours or less. NEOM Bay Airport serves the coast to the west, and a rental car or driver is essential for exploring the desert and coast.

US passport holders can apply online for the Saudi tourist eVisa, typically approved quickly; the fee, including mandatory medical insurance, is roughly US$130–145 (approximate).

Best time to visit

October to April is ideal, with warm days and cool to cold nights; pack layers, as desert evenings can be chilly and the nearby highlands occasionally see snow. Spring is especially beautiful, with green farms and wildflowers after rain. Summer is hot, best for early-morning outings and the coast.

Questions travelers ask

Do I need a guide for Wadi Disah?

A local guide with a 4x4 is strongly recommended. Tracks are sandy and unmarked, and guides know the best viewpoints and picnic spots.

How far is Tabuk from NEOM?

The NEOM coast is roughly a two- to three-hour drive west, depending on your destination. Read about NEOM and The Line.

Can I combine Tabuk with AlUla?

Yes. AlUla is a scenic road trip to the south, roughly four hours, making a fine northwest circuit with the Red Sea resorts.

Is Tabuk good for families?

Yes. Desert drives, picnics in Wadi Disah and beach days on the coast suit all ages; travel in the cooler months.

Living and investing
