Wadi Rum Luxury Desert Camps in the Valley of the Moon

Wadi Rum is a vast desert of red sand and sandstone mountains in southern Jordan, a landscape so otherworldly that it has stood in for Mars on film. A night in a luxury Wadi Rum desert camp, under one of the clearest night skies on earth, is one of the great experiences of the region.

Why go

Why go to Wadi Rum

Also known as the Valley of the Moon, Wadi Rum is a protected area of about 280 square miles, listed by UNESCO for both its natural beauty and its cultural heritage. Granite and sandstone mountains rise straight out of the sand, their cliffs carved with Nabataean inscriptions and rock art going back thousands of years. T. E. Lawrence passed through during the Arab Revolt, and the landscape later starred in Lawrence of Arabia, The Martian and Dune.

The Zalabia Bedouin who live here run most of the camps and tours, and their hospitality is part of the experience. See our Jordan luxury travel guide and the Bedouin heritage page for more.

When to go and how to arrive

Spring and autumn offer warm days and cool nights. Summer days are very hot, but nights are pleasant. Winter days are mild and sunny, and nights can drop close to freezing, so the best camps provide heating.

Most visitors arrive by road from Petra (about 90 minutes) or Aqaba (about an hour), where King Hussein International Airport receives flights from Amman and Europe. Royal Jordanian flies nonstop to Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) from New York JFK, Chicago, Detroit, Washington Dulles and, since May 2026, Dallas Fort Worth, in roughly 11 to 13 hours. Gulf and European carriers add one-stop options from almost every US city. At the Wadi Rum visitor center you leave your car and transfer by four-wheel drive to your camp.

Experiences

A half-day jeep safari takes in the classic sights: Lawrence's Spring, the red dunes, the Khazali Canyon inscriptions and the Burdah and Um Fruth rock bridges. Camel rides at sunset, horse riding with Bedouin guides, sandboarding and rock climbing on some of the finest sandstone routes in the region are all available. A hot-air balloon flight at dawn is the most memorable way to see the desert, and at night the stargazing is extraordinary.

Dinner is usually zarb, a Bedouin feast of lamb or chicken and vegetables slow-cooked in a pit in the sand. Our pages on desert sports and desert camps and lodges cover more.

Nearby

Petra is 90 minutes north and Aqaba an hour south. Across the gulf, Israel's Eilat completes a Red Sea loop. A private driver or guide makes the transfers easy.

Questions travelers ask

Questions travelers ask about Wadi Rum

How long should I stay?

One night is the minimum; two lets you combine a jeep safari, a camel ride and a dawn balloon flight without rushing.

Is Wadi Rum included in the Jordan Pass?

Yes, entry to the protected area is included.

Is it cold at night?

From November to March nights can be close to freezing. The better camps provide heaters and heavy blankets; bring warm layers.

Do Americans need a visa for Jordan?

Yes, but it is simple: US passport holders can get a visa on arrival or apply online in advance. The Jordan Pass, bought online before you travel, combines the visa fee with entry to Petra, Wadi Rum and dozens of other sites for visitors staying at least three days (two nights), and is usually the better value.
