Red Sea Diving and the Great Outdoors

Red Sea diving is among the best on earth: warm, clear water, coral walls a few fins from the beach and famous wrecks offshore. Add Musandam diving, Oman's mountains and wadis, and the great deserts, and the region becomes one of the world's finest playgrounds for the outdoors.

Why the Red Sea

Why the Red Sea and Arabia belong on every adventurer's list

The Red Sea is a long, narrow sea of remarkable clarity, warmed by the desert sun and home to more than a thousand species of fish, a good share of them found nowhere else. Its corals have proved notably hardy, and from Egypt and Jordan to Israel and Saudi Arabia the reefs begin almost at the water's edge, so even a first-time snorkeler can float over gardens of hard and soft coral within minutes of leaving a sun lounger.

On land, the region offers a different kind of grandeur: the limestone fjords of Musandam, the canyons and terraced villages of Oman's Al Hajar Mountains, the red sand and sandstone towers of Wadi Rum and AlUla, and the dunes of the Empty Quarter. The best of it can be enjoyed in real comfort, with a five-star resort or a beautifully run desert camp waiting at the end of the day. For the wider desert experience, see our guide to desert sports and safaris.

Where to go for Red Sea diving

From easy house reefs to bucket-list wrecks, these are the region's signature underwater places.

Ras Mohammed National Park

Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt

At the tip of the Sinai, sheer coral walls drop into deep blue water at Shark and Yolanda reefs, with big schools of fish in summer. Day boats leave from Sharm's marinas; see our Sharm El Sheikh guide.

SS Thistlegorm

Strait of Gubal, Egypt

A Second World War cargo ship resting upright with its holds still full of motorcycles, trucks and rail cars. It is one of the most celebrated wreck dives anywhere, reached by day boat or liveaboard; best for certified divers comfortable with current.

Advanced

The Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone

Southern Egyptian Red Sea

Remote offshore reefs known for sharks, including oceanic whitetips and hammerheads in season, and vast soft-coral walls. These are advanced dives, usually visited by liveaboard from Marsa Alam or Hurghada.

Marsa Alam and Soma Bay

Egyptian Red Sea coast

Quieter southern coast with pristine reefs, turtles in the seagrass bays and, with luck, a gentle dugong. A fine base for both divers and snorkelers; see our Soma Bay and Marsa Alam guide.

Dahab

South Sinai, Egypt

A relaxed, bohemian dive town with shore dives such as the Lighthouse and the Canyon. Its famous Blue Hole is for experienced divers and snorkelers on its shallow rim, always with a local guide.

Aqaba Marine Reserve

Aqaba, Jordan

Jordan's short coastline packs in colorful shore dives, the Japanese Garden reef and purpose-sunk wrecks such as the Cedar Pride and a retired military transport plane. Calm, easy and ideal for training; see our Aqaba guide.

Coral Beach Nature Reserve

Eilat, Israel

One of the northernmost tropical reefs in the world, with marked snorkel trails from the beach and easy dives just offshore. A good choice for families and new divers; see our Eilat guide.

The Red Sea, Saudi Arabia

Red Sea coast, Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's long coast is the newest name in diving, with reefs that saw few visitors until recently. The luxury resorts of Red Sea Global offer house reefs, guided dives and strict conservation rules; see our Saudi Red Sea guide.

Jeddah's reefs

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Dive centers in and north of Jeddah run boat trips to fringing reefs and wrecks a short ride from the city, a pleasant add-on to a visit to Al Balad. See our Jeddah guide.

To be confirmedExpedition

Farasan Banks and the far south

Southern Saudi Red Sea

A vast, remote archipelago of reefs and islands, explored mainly by expedition-style liveaboards. Operators and schedules change, so confirm availability well in advance.

Musandam diving

Musandam diving and the Gulf of Oman

Beyond the Red Sea, the rocky coasts of Oman and the UAE's east coast offer a richer, plankton-fed sea with big marine life.

Musandam Peninsula

Oman

Steep fjords, dhow cruises with dolphins alongside, and dives at Lima Rock and the outer islands where turtles, rays and big schools are common. Currents can be strong, so dive with an experienced local operator; see our Musandam guide.

Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve

Off Muscat, Oman

A protected chain of islands an hour by boat from Muscat, with turtles, reef sharks and seasonal whale sharks. Visits are regulated and some areas close in turtle-nesting season; see our Muscat guide.

Dibba Rock and Snoopy Island

Fujairah, UAE

The UAE's best snorkeling and diving lie on the east coast, about two hours from Dubai, with turtles and occasional whale sharks. Easy to pair with a stay on the Fujairah coast.

Mountains, canyons and sands

Oman hiking and wadis: mountains, canyons and sands

Oman is the region's great hiking country. On the Saiq Plateau of Jebel Akhdar, the Green Mountain, trails link terraced villages, rose gardens and pomegranate orchards at around 6,500 feet, where summer evenings are pleasantly cool. Nearby Jebel Shams, the country's highest mountain, offers the Balcony Walk, a ledge path along the rim of a vast canyon often called the Grand Canyon of Arabia. Stay at the mountain resorts of Jebel Akhdar for cliff-edge views.

Closer to the coast, wadis such as Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid hold emerald pools and narrow gorges where you can swim between rock walls. Go early, wear water shoes and bring a dry bag. A night or two at a fine camp in the Wahiba Sands completes the picture. Our Oman luxury vacations guide covers the whole country.

Desert and mountain adventures

Desert and mountain adventures across the region

In Jordan, Wadi Rum's sandstone mountains are made for jeep tours, scrambles and nights under brilliant stars, and the long-distance Jordan Trail crosses the country from north to south, with sections such as Dana to Petra that can be walked in a few days with a guide. See our guides to Wadi Rum's luxury camps and Petra.

In Saudi Arabia, AlUla offers canyon hikes, rock-art trails, hot-air balloon flights and stargazing among ancient tombs; start with our AlUla guide. In the UAE, Ras Al Khaimah's Jebel Jais, the country's highest peak, is home to one of the world's longest zip lines and cool mountain trails, while Dubai's Hatta enclave offers kayaking, mountain biking and hiking in the Hajar foothills.

Further west, Morocco's High Atlas has fine trekking from elegant kasbah lodges, including the ascent of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak; see the Atlas Mountains. In Türkiye, a sunrise balloon flight over Cappadocia is one of travel's great mornings.

Coastal property

Living by the sea: coastal property for the outdoor life

Many who fall for the region's waters come back to stay. Coastal residences on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea, in Egypt's resort towns, on Oman's Muscat coast and in Ras Al Khaimah put reefs and marinas at the front door. Our guides to Oman Luxury Real Estate and Egypt Luxury Real Estate are a good place to begin.

Questions divers and hikers ask

Do I need to be certified to dive in the Red Sea?

No. Resort dive centers offer supervised introductory dives and full beginner courses. For the offshore reefs and liveaboard routes, you will need certification and, for some sites, an advanced rating and recent dives.

Is the Red Sea good for snorkeling?

It is one of the best places in the world for it. In Sharm El Sheikh, Aqaba, Eilat and at the Saudi Red Sea resorts, healthy coral starts close to shore, often reachable from a jetty or the beach.

When is the best time for hiking in Oman and Jordan?

October to April, when days are warm and clear. Oman's high mountains, such as Jebel Akhdar, are also pleasant in summer, when they stay much cooler than the coast.

How long should I wait to fly after diving?

Dive organizations generally advise at least 12 hours after a single dive and about 18 hours or more after multiple dives or a liveaboard week; many divers simply allow 24 hours. Your dive center will advise for your plan.

Are there rules to protect the reefs?

Yes. Do not touch or stand on coral, use reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard, and do not feed fish. Many protected areas charge a small park fee and limit numbers, which helps keep the reefs healthy.
