New Development Model in brief

The New Development Model in brief

In 2021 a special commission appointed by King Mohammed VI presented the New Development Model, a blueprint for Morocco to 2035. It aims for a more productive and diversified economy, strong human capital, inclusion and opportunity for all, and regions that are resilient and sustainable. Among its targets: roughly doubling GDP per person, ensuring most pupils master basic skills, and raising women's participation in the workforce.

Sector strategies carry it forward, including a tourism roadmap, renewable energy expansion and investment in transport for the World Cup. See the national visions of the Middle East for the region.

What it means for visitors

Morocco is already a favorite of discerning travelers, and the World Cup build-out brings new hotels, airport upgrades and faster rail. Imagine Marrakech to Casablanca by high-speed train, then on to Tangier. Beyond the cities, the plan's focus on the regions is bringing better roads and new boutique lodges to the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara and the Atlantic coast, while Rabat, the royal capital, has been transformed by its riverside cultural projects. US travelers can visit visa-free for short stays, and Royal Air Maroc flies nonstop from New York. See also Fes and the Sahara desert camps of Merzouga. What it means for investors

Foreigners may buy property in Morocco, from Marrakech villas to coastal homes near Taghazout and Tangier. Infrastructure for 2030 is likely to support demand in host cities. Morocco has also become a major destination for manufacturing investment, especially cars, aircraft parts and renewable energy, which supports a growing professional class in Casablanca, Tangier and Kenitra.
