Why go to Merzouga

Nothing in Morocco compares with the moment the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear, shifting from gold to apricot to rose as the sun drops. Merzouga, a small village at their edge, is the base for the country's most beautiful Sahara landscapes, with Amazigh (Berber) and Gnaoua traditions, oases and fossil-rich plains all around.

The great change of recent years is comfort: the best camps now provide spacious tents with proper beds, en-suite bathrooms, private terraces and chef-led dinners, so the desert can be part of a refined Morocco luxury vacation. See also our wider guide to desert camps and lodges.

Best time to visit the Sahara

Autumn and spring bring warm days and comfortable nights. Winter days are sunny and mild, but nights can be very cold, which the best camps answer with heated tents and fires. From June to August daytime heat often passes 105 °F and many camps close or slow down. Note that most camps serve alcohol only if licensed, so ask in advance.

How to arrive

Most travelers drive in over two days, from Marrakech via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Aït Benhaddou and the Dades and Todra gorges, or from Fes through the Middle Atlas cedar forests. Faster options are a domestic flight to Errachidia, about two hours away, or a private jet or helicopter charter; see arriving privately and private jets. From the US, fly nonstop to Casablanca on Royal Air Maroc or seasonally to Marrakech on United or Delta.

Luxury desert camps and hotels

Camps are rated by the experience rather than official stars; prices for the best run from approximately $400 to $1,200 a night for two, usually including dinner and breakfast.

Experiences in the Sahara

Ride a camel into the dunes for sunset, try sandboarding, or explore the desert by 4x4 to the nomad tents and the Gnaoua village of Khamlia, known for its music. Watch the sunrise from the crest of the highest dune, visit fossil workshops near Erfoud, and lie back for a night of stargazing far from any light. For more desert adventures, see desert sports and the Amazigh and Bedouin traditions in Bedouin heritage.

Nearby

The Todra Gorge, Dades Valley and Valley of Roses lie on the route west; Ouarzazate's film studios and the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Benhaddou are a day's drive. Continue over the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech or north to Fes.

Practical notes for American

Practical notes for American travelers

Morocco uses the dirham, and cards are accepted in the best hotels, restaurants and boutiques, but carry cash for souks, guides and tips; about 10 percent is customary in restaurants. Light, modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is respectful away from the pool. Friday is the main prayer day, while offices and shops follow a Saturday and Sunday weekend. During Ramadan, eat and drink discreetly in public by day; hotel restaurants stay open. French and Arabic are widely spoken, and English is common in luxury hotels. Morocco's power sockets take European two-pin plugs (220V). For the desert, pack a warm layer, a scarf against the wind and sand, sunglasses and a headlamp. Mobile coverage reaches most camps, but connections can be slow, which many guests welcome.

Questions travelers ask

Questions travelers ask about the Sahara

Is it worth the long drive?

Yes, especially if you break the journey with a night in a fine kasbah and take your time through the gorges. Those short on time can fly to Errachidia or charter.

Are the camps comfortable?

The best luxury camps have real beds, private bathrooms with hot water, heating in winter and excellent food.

Can I see the Sahara on a day trip from Marrakech?

No; Merzouga is too far. The Agafay stone desert near Marrakech offers a taste of the desert in an evening.
