Why go

Why go to Essaouira

Laid out in the 18th century by a European engineer for the sultan, Essaouira's medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of ramparts, blue boats and white houses with blue shutters. Its constant trade wind keeps summer temperatures pleasant and has made it a capital of kitesurfing and windsurfing, while galleries, music and a laid-back café life give it the feel of an artists' town.

It is the classic seaside complement to Marrakech on a Morocco luxury vacation: two or three nights of fresh seafood, beach walks and argan-oil spa treatments after the intensity of the souks.

Best time to visit Essaouira

Essaouira is pleasant year round. Summer highs rarely pass the mid-70s °F, which makes it a favorite escape from inland heat in July and August, though the wind is strongest then. Spring and autumn are calmer and ideal for the beach. The Gnaoua World Music Festival, usually in June, fills the town with musicians; check current dates.

How to arrive

Most visitors drive from Marrakech, about 2.5 hours through argan country, after flying into Marrakech (seasonal United and Delta nonstops from Newark and Atlanta) or Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc nonstops from New York, Washington, Miami and Los Angeles). Essaouira's small airport has limited European flights and can accept private aircraft; see arriving privately.

Things to do

Things to do in Essaouira

Walk the Skala de la Ville ramparts with their bronze cannons, watch the fishing fleet come in, and browse the thuya-wood workshops tucked under the walls. Take a kitesurfing lesson at Sidi Kaouki or on the town beach, ride horses or camels along the sand at sunset, visit an argan-oil women's cooperative, and play the Mogador course; see our golf guide. The town's galleries and music venues reflect its long Gnaoua heritage; read more about Middle East music traditions.

Nearby

Sidi Kaouki's wild beach is 25 minutes south. The coast road continues to Agadir and Taghazout, about three hours away, for surf and resorts. Inland lie the vineyards of the Essaouira region and the road back to Marrakech.

Practical notes for American

Practical notes for American travelers

Morocco uses the dirham, and cards are accepted in the best hotels, restaurants and boutiques, but carry cash for souks, guides and tips; about 10 percent is customary in restaurants. Light, modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is respectful away from the pool. Friday is the main prayer day, while offices and shops follow a Saturday and Sunday weekend. During Ramadan, eat and drink discreetly in public by day; hotel restaurants stay open. French and Arabic are widely spoken, and English is common in luxury hotels. Morocco's power sockets take European two-pin plugs (220V). In Essaouira, bring a light jacket even in summer, as the trade wind makes evenings cool, and allow time: cars stop at the medina gates, and porters carry luggage to riads.
