Planning a Red Sea

Planning a Red Sea or Gulf yacht charter

These are sample routes to start a conversation with your broker and captain, who will adjust them to weather, permits and your interests. Distances are kept gentle so most days include a swim stop, a long lunch at anchor and time ashore. For brokers and rates, see superyacht charter; for where to berth, see marinas.

Five sample itineraries

Season October to April

Dubai and the Abu Dhabi islands

7 nights, Dubai to Abu Dhabi

Leave Dubai Harbour past the Palm and the Burj Al Arab, then cruise west to Abu Dhabi's sandbanks, the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat and Yas Marina. Finish with two days around Sir Bani Yas Island, with wildlife drives and quiet beaches. Pair with Saadiyat Island resorts.

Season October to April

The Musandam fjords

5 nights, round trip from Dubai or Khasab

Cross to Oman's Musandam peninsula for deep inlets, fishing villages reachable only by sea, and dolphins at the bow. Snorkel at Telegraph Island, overnight in sheltered khors and end with a night ashore at Six Senses Zighy Bay. See Musandam.

Permits arranged by broker

The Saudi Red Sea

7 nights, around the Red Sea resorts

Explore the coral islands of Saudi Arabia's Red Sea, with resort stops, untouched reefs and some of the clearest water anywhere. Add a private flight to AlUla for Hegra. See the Red Sea resorts and AlUla.

Season May to October

The Turkish Riviera

7 nights, Bodrum to Göcek

Sail from Bodrum along the Turquoise Coast, with stops at Datça, the bays of Hisarönü and the twelve islands of Göcek, then on to Fethiye. Ancient ruins rise above many anchorages. A classic route for both superyachts and gulets. See Bodrum.

Best spring and autumn

The Egyptian Red Sea

6 nights, El Gouna to Sharm El Sheikh

Start in El Gouna's lagoons, cruise to the reefs of the Straits of Gubal, then cross to Ras Mohammed and Tiran for world-class diving before ending in Sharm El Sheikh. See El Gouna and Sharm El Sheikh.

Before and after the voyage

Most guests add a few nights ashore. Dubai offers some of the world's finest hotels, and arriving by private jet makes the transfer to the yacht seamless.

Families who return each winter often look at a home near the marina. Our guide to Abu Dhabi Luxury Real Estate on Saadiyat and Yas is a good starting point.
