Hurghada began as a fishing village and grew into Egypt's busiest Red Sea resort city. Its great gift is the water: warm, calm and remarkably clear, with fringing reefs and offshore islands that rank among the most rewarding snorkeling and diving grounds anywhere. Winter days are typically sunny and in the mid-70s °F, which makes it an easy escape for Americans from November to March.
The city itself has a lively marina, a long promenade and a busy restaurant scene, but the finest stays sit just outside it. Sahl Hasheesh, about 12 miles south, is a planned bay of low-rise resorts and a seafront promenade; Makadi Bay, a little farther on, is quieter still. To the north, the lagoon town of El Gouna is a 30-minute drive, and the golf-and-kitesurf peninsula of Soma Bay is about 45 minutes south.
Hurghada also works beautifully as the beach half of a classic Egypt trip. Pair a few days in Cairo and the Grand Egyptian Museum with temples in Luxor, roughly a four-hour drive away, and finish with a week by the sea.

Dozens of dive sites lie within an hour of the marina, from gentle coral gardens for beginners to the famous reefs and wrecks farther north. The city has many PADI-certified dive centers offering courses in English.
A seafront walk of arcades and fountains along a sweeping bay, with a reef right off the shore. Sunset here is the quietest, most elegant hour in the area.
The city's social heart, with yachts, cafes and seafood restaurants. It is also the departure point for most boat trips and charters.
Jeep or quad trips into the mountains behind the coast end with Bedouin tea and stargazing. Private guides can arrange a more relaxed evening version.
An early start brings you to Karnak and the Valley of the Kings for the day. Many visitors prefer to stay a night or two and see it slowly.
The finest addresses sit just outside the city, in Sahl Hasheesh and along the Safaga road.
An all-suite, adults-oriented resort of domed pavilions, many with private walled pools, set on a long private beach. Service and calm are the point, and it is widely regarded as the area's finest stay.

From the US, fly to Cairo, where EgyptAir operates nonstop service from New York, then take the roughly one-hour domestic flight to Hurghada. Many travelers also connect through Istanbul, Frankfurt or the Gulf hubs, and Hurghada International receives direct flights from much of Europe. See our guide to nonstop flights from the US for current routes.
US passport holders can buy a single-entry visa on arrival at Hurghada airport (about US$30 since March 2026, paid in cash) or apply in advance for an e-visa on Egypt's official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg. Your passport should be valid for at least six months. Resort transfers to Sahl Hasheesh take about 25 minutes.
October to May is ideal, with warm sea, low humidity and steady sunshine. March, April, October and November are the sweet spots for diving and beach days alike. Summer is hot but breezy on the coast, and the water is at its warmest; see when to go for the whole region.
Living and investing: Hurghada and Sahl Hasheesh have a long-standing market for vacation apartments and villas bought by Europeans and Egyptians alike; our Egypt Luxury Real Estate guide explains how foreign buyers approach the coast.
