Why go

Why go to Aswan

Aswan has always been Egypt's southern gateway, the meeting point of Egyptian and Nubian worlds. Its pace is slower than Cairo or Luxor and its beauty softer: white-sailed feluccas weave between Elephantine and Kitchener's Island, and the west bank rises in sand toward the Tombs of the Nobles. Many travelers say it is where they truly fell in love with Egypt.

It is the natural start or finish of a Nile cruise to Luxor and the base for the journey south to the colossal temples of Abu Simbel. Combine it with Cairo for a classic ten-day luxury vacation in Egypt.

Best Aswan luxury hotels

Aswan has two true five-star hotels, one with a celebrated history and a new chapter under way, plus a few characterful smaller addresses.

Mandarin Oriental Old Cataract, Aswan

★★★★★ Corniche, above the First Cataract

The Victorian palace on the rocks where Agatha Christie wrote, with its famous terrace for tea at sunset. Now run by Mandarin Oriental: the historic Palace building stays open while the Nile Wing is renovated, with the full property due to be complete in July 2027.

Mövenpick Resort Aswan

★★★★★ Elephantine Island

A garden resort on Elephantine Island reached by the hotel's own boat, with wide river views and a rooftop lounge in its tower. Calm, green and close to the old Nubian villages.

Basma Hotel

★★★★ Hilltop above the Corniche

High on a hill near the Nubian Museum, with a large pool, gardens and sweeping views over the river and town.

Boutique

Kato Dool Nubian Resort

West bank, Nubian village

A small, colorful guesthouse in traditional Nubian style on the riverbank, for travelers who want local character rather than a big hotel.

Things to do

Things to do in Aswan

Philae Temple

The island temple of Isis, moved stone by stone to save it from the rising waters. Go by boat in late afternoon, or return for the evening sound and light show.

Abu Simbel

Ramesses II's twin temples far to the south, about three hours by road or a short flight. Around February 22 and October 22 the rising sun reaches the inner sanctuary.

Felucca to the islands

Sail at sunset around Elephantine, past the Aga Khan Mausoleum and the botanical gardens on Kitchener's Island.

Nubian villages

Visit a painted Nubian village on the west bank for tea, henna and warm hospitality.

Nubian Museum

An outstanding museum telling the story of Nubia and the international campaign to save its temples.

Kom Ombo and Edfu

The double temple of Kom Ombo and the remarkably complete Temple of Horus at Edfu, usually visited on the cruise to Luxor.

Nile cruises and Lake Nasser

Aswan Nile cruises and Lake Nasser

The Nile between Aswan and Luxor is the classic cruise, three to four nights, on ships such as the Oberoi Philae and Oberoi Zahra or a private dahabiya under sail. Mandarin Oriental is also developing its first luxury Nile ship, with no sailing date announced yet.

South of the High Dam, Lake Nasser cruises sail between Aswan and Abu Simbel, calling at rescued Nubian temples that few travelers ever see. Compare options in our guides to cruise lines and the finest suites at sea.

Where to dine

The Old Cataract's terrace and its 1902 restaurant set the standard for an elegant Aswan evening. Along the corniche and on the islands, riverside restaurants serve grilled Nile fish, Nubian stews and fresh juices. A meal in a Nubian home on the west bank, arranged through your hotel or guide, is often the highlight of the stay.

Getting there, including private

Fly nonstop from New York, Newark, Washington, Chicago or Los Angeles to Cairo on EgyptAir, then take a domestic flight of about 1 hour 20 minutes to Aswan, or the overnight sleeper train. Private jets use Aswan International Airport, and short private flights to Abu Simbel can be arranged. See private jet charter.

Good to know for US travelers

Americans can buy an e-visa online or a visa on arrival (each about $30). Aswan is the warmest stop on the classic route: winter days are sunny and dry, summers extremely hot. Dress modestly in villages and town. Alcohol is served at the main hotels and on cruise ships. Carry small Egyptian pound notes for felucca captains and guides.

And the future of the south

Aswan and the future of the south

Aswan is mainly a place to visit, though the restoration of its great hotel and new luxury river ships show the confidence returning to Upper Egypt. Investors interested in Egypt usually look to Cairo, the Red Sea and the North Coast; see our Egypt Luxury Real Estate guide.
