Why go

Why go to Cappadocia

Millions of years ago volcanic eruptions blanketed central Anatolia in ash that hardened into tuff, and wind and water have since carved it into cones, pillars and deep valleys. People have lived inside the rock for thousands of years, carving homes, monasteries and entire underground cities. Göreme National Park and the rock sites of Cappadocia are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The towns to know are Uçhisar, crowned by its rock castle; Göreme, the center of the balloon world; and Ürgüp, the most elegant base, with fine restaurants and wineries. For the wider country, see our Türkiye luxury vacation guide.

Getting there, including private

Fly nonstop from the US to Istanbul, then connect to Kayseri (ASR), about an hour from the hotels, or Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV), about 40 minutes away. Private jets use Kayseri or Nevşehir, and helicopter transfers are possible. Many travelers also drive or are chauffeured from Ankara in about three and a half hours.

Things to do

Things to do in Cappadocia

A sunrise hot air balloon flight is the defining experience: private baskets are available for couples and families, and flights depend on the morning weather, so allow a spare day. On the ground, visit the Göreme Open-Air Museum with its frescoed rock churches, descend into the underground cities of Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı, and hike the Rose and Red valleys at sunset. Cappadocia also has a long winemaking tradition, best explored with a tasting in Ürgüp. Our pages on Christian holy sites and private access experiences offer more.

Nearby

The capital, Ankara, is a comfortable drive away. Most travelers pair Cappadocia with Istanbul and the coast at Antalya.

Investing

Investing in Cappadocia

Cappadocia's property market is small and centered on restored cave houses and boutique hotels in Ürgüp and Uçhisar, where conservation rules protect the historic stone. Buyers usually look to Istanbul and the coast for larger investments; see Istanbul Luxury Real Estate and Bodrum villas.

Questions travelers ask

Two to three nights is ideal, giving time for a balloon flight, the main sites and a valley walk.

Which airport is closest?

Nevşehir is closest to the hotels, about 40 minutes; Kayseri has more flights and is about an hour away.

Is Cappadocia cold in winter?

Yes, winters are cold and often snowy, which makes for beautiful photographs. Pack warm layers from November to March.
