The Al Nahyan Family: Abu Dhabi's Ruling House

The Al Nahyan family has led Abu Dhabi for more than two centuries, and the UAE's founding President came from this ruling family; their story is the backbone of any Abu Dhabi vacation, from Qasr Al Hosn to Saadiyat Island.

From the Liwa Oasis to Qasr Al Hosn

The Al Nahyan belong to the Al Bu Falah, a leading branch of the Bani Yas tribal confederation, whose home was the Liwa Oasis on the edge of the Empty Quarter. In the 18th century the discovery of fresh water on Abu Dhabi island drew the family to the coast, where a watchtower grew into Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest stone building in the city and for generations the seat of government.

Qasr Al Hosn is now a beautifully restored museum telling the story of the family and the city. It is the natural first stop on a visit to Abu Dhabi.

Zayed the Great

Zayed the Great and Sheikh Shakhbut

Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa, who ruled from 1855 to 1909 and is remembered as Zayed the Great, made Abu Dhabi the leading power on the coast. His long reign gave the family its standing across the region.

Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan ruled from 1928 to 1966, through the last years of pearling and the arrival of oil. Abu Dhabi's first oil exports left in 1962, opening the way for transformation.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, founder of the nation

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan became Ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966 and, from 1971 until 2004, served as the founding President of the United Arab Emirates. He is revered as the father of the nation. He used oil wealth to build housing, schools and hospitals, greened the desert with millions of trees, and championed unity among the emirates. The United Arab Emirates was formed on 2 December 1971 by six emirates, and Ras Al Khaimah joined on 10 February 1972. Each emirate keeps its own ruling family, and the seven Rulers together form the Federal Supreme Council, the country's highest authority. Learn more in the UAE's history and culture.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, where he rests, is one of the most visited buildings in the world. His son Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed served as President from 2004 to 2022, a period of rapid growth for the capital.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed and the Crown Prince

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi since 14 May 2022. His leadership has placed the emirate at the forefront of artificial intelligence, clean energy, space and culture, and is reflected in the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 and the national We the UAE 2031 vision.

His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi since 29 March 2023. On the same day His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan became a Vice President of the UAE, alongside His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai.
