Iraq
Erbil travel begins with the Citadel, a mound that has been lived on for thousands of years and one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on earth. The capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq pairs that deep history with modern hotels, busy bazaars and mountain scenery close by.

Why go
Erbil, known in Kurdish as Hewlêr, rises around its Citadel, an oval mound some 30 meters high built up by successive settlements over at least six thousand years. Its walls of tightly packed houses, its gate and its Kurdish Textile Museum make it the heart of the city, and the Citadel is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Below, the covered Qaysari Bazaar sells honey, spices, nuts, textiles and copperware, and the square in front of it fills with families in the evening around the fountains. Beyond the old center, Erbil has grown into a modern city of malls, parks, international hotels and a lively café culture. For the wider country, see our Iraq travel and heritage guide.

Erbil International Airport (EBL) is modern and well connected. There are no nonstop flights from the US, but convenient one-stop connections run through Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, Doha with Qatar Airways, Dubai with Emirates and flydubai, Abu Dhabi with Etihad, and selected European hubs; see our guide to the best airlines in first and business class. The airport also handles private aircraft. Visa rules for US citizens can change, so confirm the current requirements before you book.
