Bahrain's vision in brief

Launched in October 2008, Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 aims to move the economy from oil wealth to a productive, globally competitive economy led by the private sector. It rests on three guiding principles: sustainability, competitiveness and fairness. Its practical focus has been finance, logistics, manufacturing, technology and tourism.

Since 2021 an Economic Recovery Plan has accelerated delivery, with priority projects and sector strategies, including a tourism strategy aimed at growing visitor numbers through events, leisure and heritage. See the national visions of the Middle East for the region.

What it means for visitors

Bahrain is relaxed and easy to visit, with UNESCO-listed Qal'at al-Bahrain and the Pearling Path, a lively dining scene and beach resorts. Read our Bahrain luxury travel guide and Manama luxury hotels, and the history of pearling in the Gulf. The kingdom is also a natural add-on to a trip to Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, just across the King Fahd Causeway. Weekends in Bahrain fall on Friday and Saturday, and alcohol is available in licensed hotels and restaurants.

What it means for investors

Bahrain has long been a regional center for banking, Islamic finance and insurance, and its low costs and open ownership rules for most business activities make it a practical base for Gulf operations. Foreigners can buy freehold in designated areas such as Amwaj Islands, Durrat Al Bahrain, Diyar Al Muharraq and Bahrain Bay, and a property purchase above set thresholds can qualify for Bahrain's ten-year golden residency. See Bahrain property investment and golden residency.
