Why go

Why go to Algiers

Algeria is Africa's largest country and one of its least visited, which gives Algiers the thrill of discovery. The capital's Casbah, a steep maze of Ottoman-era houses, mosques and palaces above the port, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while the lower city is lined with elegant French-era boulevards and arcades, painted white against the blue bay.

The city's landmarks range from the Martyrs' Memorial on its hilltop to the Great Mosque of Algiers, inaugurated in 2024 with the world's tallest minaret, and the Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Afrique overlooking the sea. It is the natural starting point for an Algeria travel guide itinerary that might continue to Roman ruins, the Kabylie mountains and the Sahara.

Best time to visit Algiers

Spring and autumn are warm and bright, with highs in the 70s °F. Summer is hot and humid on the coast, and winter mild and sometimes rainy. The weekend is Friday and Saturday. Alcohol is available in some international hotels and licensed restaurants, but much less widely than in neighboring countries. During Ramadan, many restaurants close by day and reopen in festive style after sunset; dress modestly throughout the city.

How to arrive

There are currently no nonstop flights between the US and Algeria. Convenient one-stop connections run through Paris, Rome, Madrid, Frankfurt and Istanbul, or through the Gulf with Qatar Airways and Emirates; total travel time from the US East Coast is typically 11 to 14 hours. Air Algérie, the national airline, links Algiers with many European cities. Houari Boumediene Airport has a modern international terminal and a business-aviation area; see arriving privately. US citizens need a visa obtained in advance; confirm requirements with the Embassy of Algeria in Washington.
