Why go to Al-Ahsa

In the east of Saudi Arabia, where desert meets the Gulf coast, underground springs feed a vast oasis that has been farmed for thousands of years. Al-Ahsa was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018 as an evolving cultural landscape: gardens, canals, wells, a drainage lake, historic buildings and archaeological sites, all set among some two and a half million date palms. It is widely regarded as one of the largest palm oases in the world.

The oasis is also a living center of craft. Al-Ahsa has been a UNESCO Creative City for crafts and folk art since 2015, known for its bisht cloaks, palm-frond weaving and pottery. Its coffee and date traditions run deep, and the dates of the region, especially the Khalas variety, are prized across the Gulf. Pair a visit with Al Khobar and the Eastern Province coast, about two hours away by road, or with Riyadh.

Things to do in Al-Ahsa

Jabal Al-Qarah caves

Al-Qarah, Al-Ahsa

A flat-topped mountain of honey-colored limestone carved by wind and water into narrow canyons and cave passages that stay pleasantly cool even on hot days. Walk the lit paths inside, then take in the view of palms stretching to the horizon.

Al-Qaisariya Souq

Hofuf old town

One of the oldest markets in the Kingdom, a covered labyrinth of shops selling bisht cloaks, spices, incense, dates, textiles and brassware. Come in the evening, when it is busiest and most atmospheric.

Ibrahim Palace (Qasr Ibrahim)

Hofuf

An Ottoman-era fortress with thick walls, corner towers, a domed mosque and shaded courtyards, now among the oasis's signature heritage sites.

Jawatha Mosque

Al-Kilabiyah, Al-Ahsa

The site of one of the earliest mosques in Islam, revered as the place where an early Friday prayer was held outside Madinah. It is a quiet, moving stop; visit respectfully and see our great mosques and Islamic sites guide.

Springs and palm gardens

Across the oasis

Historic springs such as Ain Najm, known for its warm mineral water, once fed the oasis's canals. Ask a local guide to take you into a working palm farm, especially during the late-summer date harvest.

Al-Asfar Lake and dunes

East of the oasis

Where the oasis drains into the sands, a shallow lake and wetlands attract migrating birds, framed by golden dunes ideal for a sunset drive.

Crafts and workshops

Hofuf

Watch artisans weave palm fronds, embroider bishts and throw pottery in family workshops. A hand-finished bisht makes a memorable keepsake.

Where to stay in Al-Ahsa

Al-Ahsa's top address is a five-star overlooking the oasis; the Eastern Province coast offers more choice.

InterContinental Al Ahsa

★★★★★ Hofuf, Al-Ahsa

The oasis's leading hotel, close to the airport, the railway station and the Al-Qarah caves, with rooms and suites overlooking the palms and city, three restaurants, a pool and a L'Occitane spa.

Stay in Al Khobar

Al Khobar, Eastern Province

For a wider range of luxury hotels on the Gulf, base yourself in Al Khobar and visit the oasis as a long day trip. See our Al Khobar hotels guide.

Getting there

From the US, Saudia flies nonstop to Riyadh and Jeddah from several American gateways, and Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad connect easily through their Gulf hubs; see our guide to nonstop flights from the US. From Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) trains run to Hofuf in roughly three hours, a comfortable and scenic option; the drive is similar. Al-Ahsa International Airport has domestic flights, and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam is about 90 minutes away by road.

US passport holders can apply online for the Saudi tourist eVisa, typically approved quickly; the fee, including mandatory medical insurance, is roughly US$130–150 (approximate).

Best time to visit

November to March brings mild, sunny days that are perfect for walking the souk and gardens. Late summer is very hot but coincides with the date harvest, a special time to see the oasis at work. Ramadan and the winter festival season bring evening markets and celebrations; see our festivals and seasons page.

Questions travelers ask

Why is Al-Ahsa a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

It was inscribed in 2018 as an evolving cultural landscape: a vast palm oasis with gardens, canals, springs, wells, historic buildings and archaeological sites showing human settlement over thousands of years. Explore more on our UNESCO World Heritage page.

Can Al-Ahsa be a day trip from Riyadh?

Yes, by train or car in about three hours each way, though one night lets you see the souk in the evening and the caves in the cooler morning.
