The Al Qasimi family of Ras Al Khaimah leads the UAE's northernmost emirate, and its ruling family has turned mountains, beaches and ancient sites into one of the fastest-growing luxury resort destinations in the Gulf.
At a glance
Ras Al Khaimah stands on the site of Julfar, a celebrated medieval port whose traders sailed to India and China. In the 18th century it became the seat of the Qawasim, the seafaring Al Qasimi family whose other branch leads Sharjah. The United Arab Emirates was formed on 2 December 1971 by six emirates, and Ras Al Khaimah joined on 10 February 1972. Each emirate keeps its own ruling family, and the seven Rulers together form the Federal Supreme Council. Learn more in the UAE's history and culture.
