Difference

Umrah and Hajj: the difference

Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage, may be performed at any time of year outside the days of Hajj. Its rites, which include entering the state of ihram, circling the Kaaba seven times and walking between Safa and Marwah, can be completed in a few hours, though most pilgrims stay several days to pray at the Grand Mosque and then travel on to Madinah.

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, required once in a lifetime of every adult Muslim who is able. It takes place over set days in the month of Dhul Hijjah and moves between Makkah, Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah. Places are allocated by quota, so planning starts many months ahead.

How Muslims

How Muslims from the US plan Umrah through Nusuk

Saudi Arabia now runs pilgrimage through Nusuk, the official platform and app. American citizens can apply online for a Saudi tourist eVisa, which also allows Umrah outside the Hajj season; every pilgrim, whatever the visa, must then book an Umrah permit in the Nusuk app, along with the time slot for prayers in the Rawdah in Madinah. Those applying for a dedicated Umrah visa need confirmed hotel and transport bookings linked through Nusuk first. For the current season, Umrah visas are issued until about March 9, 2027, with entry until about March 23 and departure by about April 7. Rules change from season to season, so confirm current requirements with the Saudi visa portal before you book.

For Hajj, pilgrims living in the United States register on Nusuk Hajj, choose a package from licensed providers and pay through the platform. Premium packages include air-conditioned tents with private facilities in Mina, closer camps and dedicated scholars. Allocation is limited and not guaranteed, so register as soon as the season opens.

Adult women may perform Umrah without a male guardian under current Saudi rules. Vaccination requirements, including meningitis, are set each year by the Saudi Ministry of Health.

Makkah hotels near the Haram

The finest hotels sit in the Abraj Al Bait (Clock Tower) complex and Jabal Omar, a few minutes' walk from the Grand Mosque. Ask for a Kaaba-view or Haram-view room; they sell out first in Ramadan. See our full guide to Makkah hotels near the Haram.

Seasons and timing

The cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable for Umrah. Ramadan, and above all its last ten nights, is the most spiritually sought-after time, and the busiest; book a year ahead. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around February 8, subject to the sighting of the moon. The Umrah season for international pilgrims reopens shortly after Hajj.

Dress, hours and etiquette

Men enter ihram in two plain white unstitched cloths; women wear modest, loose clothing that covers the body, leaving the face and hands uncovered. The Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque are open around the clock, but the courtyards fill completely before each of the five daily prayers and at Friday prayer, when movement inside is paused. Plan tawaf in the late night or mid-morning, when it is quieter.

Keep photography to a minimum and never film worshippers. Follow the instructions of mosque staff and use the designated lanes for the elderly and for wheelchairs, which can be booked in advance. A knowledgeable guide, or mutawwif, helps with the rites and the crowds.
