There has rarely been a better moment to visit Oman. This week the Sultanate brought 29 tourism partners to World Travel Market in London, helped launch new global tourism indices with the World Travel & Tourism Council, and carried the glow of a place on Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2027 list.
At a glance
Oman has had a fine week on the world stage. At World Travel Market in London, one of the travel industry's great annual gatherings, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism brought a pavilion of 29 Omani tourism institutions, Oman Airports among them, to meet travel partners and the media. The minister described the delegation's purpose simply: "We come to London with a message inviting the world to discover the Sultanate of Oman."
That invitation lands at a good time. In September, Lonely Planet named Oman among its Best in Travel 2027 destinations, praising its desert landscapes, soaring mountains and long coastline, and adding that the most memorable part of a trip is meeting the hospitable Omani people. Our Oman luxury vacation guide brings the country together in one place.
New tourism indices
On November 4, the World Travel & Tourism Council launched its first Power, Efficiency and Opportunity Indices at WTM London, developed with Oxford Economics and with OMRAN Group, Oman's tourism development company, as partner. The indices compare travel and tourism across 184 economies, measuring economic weight, environmental efficiency and the jobs the sector creates.
Oman's scores improved on all three measures between 2019 and 2024. Women hold 28 percent of the country's travel and tourism jobs, against 18 percent across the Middle East, and young people hold 13 percent of tourism jobs, against under 9 percent across the wider economy. "Travel & Tourism is one of the world's most powerful sectors," said Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of WTTC. Eng. Ayad Al Balushi, CEO of OMRAN Group, called the indices "an important step forward in how we define and measure tourism success." The work supports the goals of Oman Vision 2040.
Oman's message in London leaned toward the traveler who values space, quiet and fine service. The ministry and Visa launched a campaign for Visa cardholders worldwide, presenting luxury, adventure and marine holidays through the Experience Oman platform, where packages can be booked with Visit Oman, the national travel operator. Oman also announced that it will host the Exclusive Wedding Planners Congress in 2027, with more than 500 participants from 80 countries, a natural fit for a country of palace hotels and private beaches; see our guide to luxury weddings in the Middle East.
