Musandam Fjords: Dhow Cruises and Six Senses Zighy Bay

The Musandam fjords are Arabia's most dramatic seascape, where mountains plunge into turquoise inlets at the tip of the peninsula. A dhow cruise through the khors and a stay at Six Senses Zighy Bay make this one of the great luxury escapes in Oman.

Why go

Why go to Musandam

Musandam is an Omani enclave separated from the rest of the country by the UAE, a rugged peninsula reaching into the Strait of Hormuz. Its deep inlets, or khors, are walled by sheer limestone cliffs, dotted with fishing villages reachable only by boat, and home to dolphins that play in the bow waves of passing dhows. It feels a world away from the cities, yet it is only a couple of hours' drive from Dubai.

Musandam rounds out a wider trip that might include Muscat and the UAE's Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. See our Oman luxury vacation guide for country essentials.

Best time to visit

Best time to visit and getting there

October to April brings calm water and warm, clear days, ideal for cruising and snorkeling. Summer is hot, though the sea breezes help on the water.

Most visitors arrive from Dubai: Six Senses Zighy Bay is about two hours by car via Dibba, and the resort can arrange transfers, while Khasab, the main town, is around two and a half hours via Ras Al Khaimah. There are short domestic flights from Muscat to Khasab. Bring your passport for the border crossing, and check entry rules for Oman before you go; the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal has the current rules for US passports. From the US, fly into Dubai with Emirates or into Doha or Abu Dhabi, then drive. Arriving by private yacht is also possible; see our superyacht charter guide.

Where to dine

Dining in Musandam centers on the resorts. At Six Senses Zighy Bay, the clifftop restaurant serves dinner with views down over the bay, and private beach or villa dinners can be arranged. In Khasab, simple harbor-side restaurants serve the day's catch, and lunch on board a dhow, usually grilled fish and Omani rice, is part of the experience.

Owning a home in Oman

Musandam itself is not a freehold market for foreign buyers, but many visitors who fall for Oman look at the Integrated Tourism Complexes around Muscat, where foreigners can own beachfront homes and qualify for residency. Read our guide to Oman Luxury Real Estate investment.

Questions travelers ask

Questions travelers ask about Musandam

Can I visit Musandam as a day trip from Dubai?

Yes. Tours leave early from Dubai for a dhow cruise in the fjords and return in the evening, though an overnight stay is far more relaxing.

Do I need a visa for Musandam?

Musandam is part of Oman, so Omani entry rules apply at the border. Check the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal for the current rules for US passports before you travel, and if you are driving a rental car from the UAE, check that it is insured for Oman.

How do I get to Six Senses Zighy Bay?

The resort is about two hours by car from Dubai International Airport via Dibba, and it can arrange private transfers.
