Why go
Muscat has kept its character while the Gulf around it raced skyward. Building heights are modest, the architecture is traditional, and the city unrolls along coves and beaches backed by dramatic mountains. You can watch dolphins in the morning, wander a centuries-old souq in the afternoon and spend the evening at one of the region's finest opera houses.
It is also the gateway to everything else Oman offers: the cool heights of Jebel Akhdar, the fjords of Musandam and the green monsoon season in Salalah. For country basics, see our Oman luxury vacation guide.

Best time to visit
October to April is the season, with warm days, calm seas and pleasant evenings for outdoor dining. Summers are very hot along the coast, which is when Omanis head to the mountains or south to Salalah. During Ramadan, eat and drink discreetly by day and enjoy the festive evenings.
There are no nonstop flights between the US and Oman at present. The easiest routes connect once through Doha with Qatar Airways, Dubai with Emirates, Abu Dhabi with Etihad, or via Istanbul or Europe, with Oman Air and other carriers flying onward to Muscat International Airport. For entry, check the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal before you travel. Private aircraft are handled at Muscat, and our private jet charter guide explains the options; yachts berth at the marinas of Al Mouj and Muscat Bay.
Oman is welcoming but conservative: cover shoulders and knees in town, and wear swimwear only at the beach or pool. Alcohol is served in licensed hotels and restaurants.

Best hotels
Muscat's best hotels are spread along the coast, from the beaches of Shatti Al Qurum and Al Mouj to the secluded coves south of the old town.

Foreigners can buy freehold homes in Oman's Integrated Tourism Complexes, including Al Mouj Muscat, Muscat Bay and Jebel Sifah, with apartments from approximately $250,000 and beachfront villas well above $1 million.
