Middle East Sports Events: A World Capital of Sport

Middle East sports events now fill the global calendar from January to December, from the world's richest horse races to Formula 1 under the lights. With the 2034 FIFA World Cup coming to Saudi Arabia, there has never been a better time to plan a sports trip to the region.

Why the region became a home of world sport

Two decades ago, a sports fan flying to the Gulf would have found a handful of golf tournaments and one tennis week in Dubai. Today the Middle East hosts four Formula 1 Grands Prix, the two most valuable horse races on earth, a top-flight football league that draws stars from Europe and South America, championship boxing, numbered UFC events and a tennis calendar that runs from Doha to Riyadh. Qatar staged the first FIFA World Cup in the Arab world in 2022, and FIFA confirmed in December 2024 that Saudi Arabia will host the 48-team tournament in 2034.

Behind the boom are national plans that treat sport as a pillar of tourism, health and the economy, from Saudi Vision 2030 to Dubai's D33 agenda. Cities have built stadiums, arenas and circuits that rank among the best in the world, and many sit minutes from five-star hotels, beaches and new neighborhoods. For investors, the same districts that hold the arenas, such as Qiddiya outside Riyadh and Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, are among the region's fastest-growing places to live and build.

A calendar that never stops

The season is driven by the weather. From October to April the Gulf is warm, dry and sunny, and that is when the great events cluster: the Saudi Cup in February, the Dubai World Cup in late March or early April, tennis in February, golf from January to November, and the Formula 1 finale on Yas Island in December. Riyadh Season, the capital's winter festival, wraps boxing, tennis exhibitions and wrestling into a single program of entertainment.

Summer belongs to indoor arenas, the Esports World Cup in Riyadh and the mountains and coasts. Heritage sports follow their own rhythm: camel racing and falconry peak in the cooler months, when festivals like the King Abdulaziz Camel Festival bring tens of thousands of animals and visitors into the desert. See our Events Calendar and When to Go guide for month-by-month detail.

Planning a sports trip from the US

Getting there is simple. Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad and Saudia fly nonstop from major American cities to Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh, with flight times of roughly 12 to 15 hours from the East Coast; see nonstop flights from the US. US passport holders can generally enter the UAE without a visa in advance and can apply online for a Saudi tourist eVisa; our visas and entry guide explains the current rules.

Book hotels early for the biggest weekends, when rooms near Meydan, Yas Marina and Riyadh's arenas sell out months ahead. Tickets for many events in Saudi Arabia are sold through the official Riyadh Season platform, Webook. For a fuller trip, pair a race day with the finest hotels and a few days at the beach.

Looking ahead to 2034

The decade ahead is extraordinary. Saudi Arabia hosts the AFC Asian Cup in January 2027, Expo 2030 in Riyadh and the FIFA World Cup in 2034, while Doha is set to stage the Asian Games in 2030 and Riyadh in 2034. New stadiums, rail lines and airports are being built to match; read about Expo 2030 and the 2034 World Cup and the amazing things being built across the region. For property buyers, homes near these new districts are a natural long-term angle, which we cover in investing in the future.
