Middle East marathons, world-class cycling tours and triathlons fill the cool months from November to March, on courses past skylines, desert and sea. For travelers, a race is one of the best reasons to plan a winter sports vacation in the Gulf.

When the northern winter closes in, the Gulf opens its roads. Between late October and March the mornings are mild, the air is dry and the light is soft, and cities from Dubai to Riyadh turn their great highways and corniches over to runners and cyclists. Many races start at dawn and finish before the day warms, so the timing is part of the plan, as our guide to the best time to visit the Middle East explains.
The scale is striking. Dubai closes Sheikh Zayed Road for a single morning run that drew a record crowd of about 307,000 people in 2025, and the UAE Tour brings the world's top professional cyclists to the summit of Jebel Hafeet each February. Saudi Arabia has added a full marathon in Riyadh and a stage race through the canyons of AlUla, while Qatar now hosts the season final of the T100 triathlon world tour.
For Americans the appeal is simple: a race weekend, a week of sunshine and some of the finest hotels in the region in one trip. Most events take amateurs with no qualifying time, and finish lines sit minutes from beaches, souks and Dubai's luxury hotels. It all belongs to a larger story told on our Sport page.

Cycling tours, marathons, triathlons and city-wide fitness festivals worth planning a trip around.
