America and the Middle East: A Friendship Since 1777

The ties between the United States and the Middle East are older and closer than most Americans know. They began in Morocco in 1777, grew through oil, education and medicine, and today reach from American universities in Doha and Abu Dhabi to Disney, Six Flags, Wynn and the Guggenheim building some of their most ambitious projects in the region.

It began in Morocco

In 1777, while the American Revolution was still being fought, Morocco became the first country to recognize the independence of the United States. The two countries signed a Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1786, and in 1821 Morocco gave the young republic a building in Tangier. The Tangier American Legation is the only US National Historic Landmark in a foreign country, and today it is a museum and cultural center you can visit. See Tangier.

The friendship has continued ever since. Morocco remains one of America's oldest partners, and Royal Air Maroc flies nonstop from New York to Casablanca.

Oil, a meeting at sea, and a long partnership

In 1938 American geologists struck oil at Dammam Well No. 7 in Saudi Arabia. The American company that developed the field grew into Saudi Aramco, now fully Saudi-owned and one of the most valuable companies in the world. In February 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt met King Abdulaziz Al Saud aboard the USS Quincy on Egypt's Great Bitter Lake, beginning a partnership between the two countries that has lasted more than eighty years. See Saudi Arabia's history.

Across the Gulf, the same story repeated: American engineers, companies and schools helped build modern economies, and Gulf investment flows back into the United States today.
