Visa on arrival: what to expect

The United Arab Emirates welcomes US citizens holding a regular passport with a free visitor visa on arrival, valid for 30 days. There is no form, no fee and no advance approval. At Dubai International, Abu Dhabi's Zayed International or Sharjah, you queue at immigration (or use the smart gates where eligible), your passport is scanned, and an electronic entry record is created. The whole process often takes only a few minutes.

The same visa works across all seven emirates, so one arrival covers Dubai's luxury hotels, the museums of Abu Dhabi, the beaches of Ras Al Khaimah and the mountains of Fujairah. Road trips between emirates need no further checks.

Staying longer than 30 days

If you fall in love with the place, as many do, you can apply to extend your stay before the 30 days run out. Extensions are handled by the immigration authorities (ICP for Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates, GDRFA for Dubai) through their online services or an authorized typing center, and are granted at their discretion. Do not let the visa lapse: overstays carry daily fines.

For stays of months or years, the UAE offers a ladder of options, from multi-entry tourist visas and the remote-work visa to the ten-year Golden Visa for investors and property owners. Our guides to golden visas and residency and living in the Middle East explain the routes.

US Preclearance in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is home to the only US Customs and Border Protection Preclearance facility in the Middle East. Travelers flying nonstop from Zayed International to the United States clear US immigration and customs in Abu Dhabi before boarding, and land in America as domestic passengers, walking straight to baggage claim or a connecting flight. It is one of the quiet advantages of flying Etihad home, and a reason many Americans choose Abu Dhabi as their gateway. See our nonstop flights table for the routes.

Medicines, customs and what to declare

The UAE is strict about medicines. Several prescription and over-the-counter products common in the United States, including some strong painkillers, sleeping pills and ADHD medicines, are controlled. Visitors carrying controlled medicines should apply in advance for approval through the Ministry of Health and Prevention's online service, carry the medicine in its original packaging with the prescription, and bring no more than a personal supply. CBD products and poppy seeds are not permitted.

Declare cash and valuables worth more than 60,000 dirhams (about US$16,000). E-cigarettes, laser pointers, fireworks and any weapons or weapon parts should stay at home. Everyday items, from cameras to a reasonable amount of duty-free, pass without fuss.

Questions travelers ask

Do I need to apply for a Dubai visa before I fly?

No. US citizens with a regular passport receive a free 30-day visa on arrival. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least six months.

Can I visit Abu Dhabi and Dubai on the same visa?

Yes. The visa on arrival covers all seven emirates. Many visitors split their stay between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Can I leave the UAE and come back on the same visa?

Usually you receive a new visa on arrival each time you enter, but rules on repeat entries can change. Confirm with the immigration authority if you plan several short trips.

Can I take my prescription medicines?

Usually yes, with care. Check whether your medicine is controlled and, if so, apply for approval through the Ministry of Health and Prevention before you travel.

Confirm Before You GoRules change. Before you travel, confirm current UAE entry requirements on the official ICP portal and the US State Department's UAE page. See the advice ↗
