Why go to Hail

Hail lies on a plateau between two granite ranges, Aja and Salma, on the edge of the great Nafud desert. For centuries it was a stop for caravans and pilgrims crossing Arabia, and it remains a proud, welcoming city. Hail is closely tied to Hatim al-Tai, the pre-Islamic poet whose generosity became legendary across the Arab world; the tradition of Arab hospitality and the majlis is felt strongly here.

The great draw is the rock art. In 2015 UNESCO inscribed two sites, Jabal Umm Sinman at Jubbah and the Jabal al-Manjor and Raat hills at Shuwaymis, as Rock Art in the Hail Region. Thousands of engraved figures of people, camels, ibex and horses record ten millennia of life in a once-greener Arabia. Combine Hail with AlUla and Madinah for a classic northern heritage route.

Getting there

From the US, Saudia flies nonstop to Riyadh and Jeddah from several American gateways, and Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad connect easily through their Gulf hubs; see our guide to nonstop flights from the US. Domestic flights connect Riyadh and Jeddah with Hail International Airport in under two hours. Saudi Arabia Railways' northern line links Riyadh with Hail, a relaxing alternative to flying. For Jubbah and Shuwaymis, hire a driver or 4x4 with a guide.

US passport holders can apply online for the Saudi tourist eVisa, typically approved quickly; the fee, including mandatory medical insurance, is roughly US$130–145 (approximate).

Best time to visit

October to April is ideal: sunny, mild days and cool nights, sometimes cold in midwinter, so bring a warm layer. Spring can bring green growth to the desert after rain. Summer is hot; plan rock-art visits for early morning.

Questions travelers ask

Can I visit Jubbah and Shuwaymis in one day?

They lie in different directions from Hail, so most visitors give each its own day, or at least a long day with an early start.

Who was Hatim al-Tai?

A pre-Islamic Arab poet and chieftain from the Hail region, famed for his extraordinary generosity; his name remains a byword for hospitality across the Arab world.

Is a guide required at the rock art sites?

Guides are recommended and often required at Shuwaymis because of its remote location; check the latest arrangements with Visit Saudi before you go.
