Why go

Why go to the Atlas Mountains

The High Atlas form a wall of peaks south of Marrakech, and within an hour the palm groves give way to walnut terraces, rushing rivers and earth-colored Amazigh (Berber) villages clinging to the slopes. Mount Toubkal, at 13,671 feet, is the highest summit in North Africa, and the valleys around Imlil, Asni, Ouirgane and Ourika are laced with mule paths that make for superb walking.

The region's luxury lodges are among the most memorable places to stay in all of Morocco, combining mountain views with spas, pools and Moroccan cooking. Many travelers spend two or three nights here between the city and the Sahara on a Morocco luxury vacation.

Best time to visit

Spring brings blossom and green terraces; early autumn is golden and clear. Summer is pleasantly cooler than Marrakech, ideal for escaping the heat. From December to March the peaks are snow-covered, and Oukaïmeden, about 90 minutes from Marrakech, even has ski lifts in good years. Mountain villages are conservative, so dress modestly when walking.

How to arrive

Fly into Marrakech, seasonally nonstop from Newark on United or Atlanta on Delta, or nonstop to Casablanca on Royal Air Maroc from New York JFK, Washington, Miami or Los Angeles and connect. Your lodge will arrange a private transfer; the last stretch to some lodges is by foot or mule. Helicopter transfers can be arranged on request; see arriving privately.

Things to do

Things to do in the Atlas Mountains

Hike with a mountain guide through Imlil's villages, or attempt the two-day climb of Toubkal from April to October. Ride mules to remote hamlets, visit an Amazigh family for tea and bread baked in a clay oven, and explore the waterfalls of the Ourika Valley. In the Agafay desert, ride camels or quad bikes at sunset, and in winter take a scenic drive to Oukaïmeden. For more adventures see desert sports and the outdoors guide.

Nearby

The Tizi n'Tichka pass crosses the High Atlas to Ouarzazate and the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Benhaddou, then on to the Dades Valley and the dunes of Merzouga. To the west lies the road to Agadir and Taghazout; to the north, the Middle Atlas cedar forests near Fes.

Practical notes for American

Practical notes for American travelers

Morocco uses the dirham, and cards are accepted in the best hotels, restaurants and boutiques, but carry cash for souks, guides and tips; about 10 percent is customary in restaurants. Light, modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is respectful away from the pool. Friday is the main prayer day, while offices and shops follow a Saturday and Sunday weekend. During Ramadan, eat and drink discreetly in public by day; hotel restaurants stay open. French and Arabic are widely spoken, and English is common in luxury hotels. Morocco's power sockets take European two-pin plugs (220V). In the mountains, wear proper walking shoes, ask before photographing villagers, and let your lodge arrange licensed guides, which also supports local families.

Questions travelers ask

Questions travelers ask about the Atlas

Can I visit the Atlas on a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes, the Ourika Valley and Imlil are easy day trips, but one or two nights at a lodge is far more rewarding.

Do I need experience to climb Toubkal?

No technical skills are needed in summer, but good fitness and a licensed guide are essential, and the altitude is significant.

Is it cold?

Days are mild most of the year, but nights are cool, and winters bring snow on the high peaks.
