A golden age for museums

In barely a decade, the region has built a remarkable run of world-class museums. Architects including Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry, Norman Foster and I. M. Pei have given the Gulf some of its most photographed buildings, while Egypt has opened a home worthy of Tutankhamun. For travelers, it means you can see five thousand years of art and history in a single long weekend.

Abu Dhabi's Saadiyat Island is the center of gravity, with the Louvre, the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum and teamLab Phenomena a few minutes apart, and the Guggenheim joining them. See our Saadiyat Cultural District page and stay at one of the Saadiyat Island resorts.

Seeing them well

Most museums offer private and after-hours tours on request; see our page on private access and VIP experiences. Shoulders and knees should be covered at most cultural sites. For the art market itself, continue to galleries and auction houses.

New cultural districts lift the neighborhoods around them, and Saadiyat is the clearest example. Read more on Abu Dhabi Luxury Real Estate.
