Shopping in Dubai

Shopping in Dubai and across the region

The Gulf has built some of the most ambitious shopping destinations in the world: climate-controlled avenues of flagship boutiques, hotels and restaurants under one roof, often linked straight to a metro line or a five-star lobby. Dubai leads, with two of the busiest luxury malls anywhere, while Abu Dhabi, Doha and Riyadh have answered with quieter, more exclusive addresses aimed at serious buyers.

The old markets are the other half of the story. A morning in the Dubai Gold Souk, Doha's Souq Waqif or the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is part shopping, part history lesson, and the craftsmanship is real. Bargaining is expected in the souks and not in the malls, and a polite, unhurried approach always works best.

For the flagship houses themselves, see the great marques and their regional flagships; for watches and fine jewelry, our guide to Dubai's jewelers and watchmakers. Plan the rest of the trip around Dubai's luxury hotels and the wider shopping section.

Tips for shopping

Tips for shopping in Dubai and the Gulf

Malls open late and stay busy well past 10pm, especially on weekends; mornings are the quietest time for a private appointment. Most luxury boutiques will arrange a personal shopper or a private viewing on request, and the big hotels can book this for you.

In the UAE, visitors can claim back most of the 5% VAT on eligible purchases through the digital refund system at the airport. Keep receipts and ask the boutique to tag your purchase at checkout. During Ramadan, malls stay open later into the night and many run special evening events.

If you find yourself returning often, the region's shopping districts sit beside some of its most desirable homes: see Dubai luxury property and the golden visa and shopping and souks in Marrakech.
