Middle East Cruise Lines: Who Sails the Gulf, the Red Sea and the Nile

A Middle East cruise can mean a week of Gulf cities from Dubai, a Red Sea voyage from Jeddah, a slow luxury Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, or a summer on Türkiye's coast. Here is who is sailing, where, and what to check before you book.

Shape of the season

A Middle East cruise in 2026-27: the shape of the season

The region offers four very different kinds of cruising. The Gulf winter program links Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Bahrain and Muscat on week-long loops. The Red Sea brings Saudi Arabia's coast, Aqaba for Petra, and Egypt's resorts. The Nile is a world of its own, best on a small luxury ship or a private dahabiya. And from spring to late autumn, Istanbul, the Turkish Riviera and Cyprus join the great Eastern Mediterranean routes.

The Gulf calendar for winter 2026-27 is lighter than in recent years. Several of the big European lines have placed their ships elsewhere this season, so travelers who want a Gulf city break by sea should look closely at the few departures on sale and consider pairing a shorter voyage with a stay on land, such as Dubai's finest hotels or Abu Dhabi and Saadiyat.

Meanwhile the Nile is having a fine season, with new luxury dahabiyas launching, and the Red Sea from Jeddah remains the home waters of Saudi Arabia's own cruise line. For the ports themselves, see our guide to cruise ports and terminals.

Choosing the right voyage

For a first visit to Egypt, a luxury Nile cruise of four to seven nights between Luxor and Aswan is the classic way in, best combined with a few nights in Cairo. See our guides to Luxor and Aswan.

For the Red Sea, a Jeddah departure pairs naturally with a stay in Jeddah's Al Balad and its new hotels, while a call at Aqaba is the gateway to Petra and Wadi Rum.

If you prefer your own route and your own pace, the region is superb for private charter. See superyacht charter and our sample yacht itineraries. For the finest staterooms afloat, see the Top 20 Suites at Sea.

Many who fall for the Gulf by sea come back to look at a home ashore. Our guide to Dubai luxury property is a good place to start.

Middle East cruise questions

When is the best time for a Gulf cruise?

The Gulf season runs from about November to April, when days are warm and sunny and evenings are pleasant. Summer is very hot and ships move elsewhere.

Is a Nile cruise better on a large ship or a dahabiya?

Dahabiyas carry only a handful of suites under sail and stop at quieter sites; modern Nile ships offer more space, a pool and a fuller program. Both cover Luxor and Aswan.

Do Americans need visas for a cruise in the region?

Rules differ by country and some cruise lines arrange entry for passengers. Check each country's rules and your line's guidance before you sail.

Is alcohol served on Aroya?

Aroya is designed for Saudi and Gulf travelers and offers alcohol-free hospitality, with a strong focus on families, dining and entertainment.
